# Clubs & CrushSuite Compliance

Clubs and Compliance are separate apps that work together. What the Compliance Fees setting actually does, how the fee is worked out, and what a failed check does.

#### What the Compliance Fees setting does

Each club has a **Compliance Fees** setting — **Add compliance fee to each order** or **Do not add compliance fees** — in the club's **Settings**. This option only appears once CrushSuite detects CrushSuite Compliance is installed on your store. See the [Club Settings Reference](https://crushsuite.gitbook.io/docs/clubs/reference/club-settings-reference) for where it lives and what happens if you change it later.

#### How the fee is actually worked out

The setting is only one of three things CrushSuite weighs at order time. The other two are whether Compliance is installed, and whether the customer has a date of birth on file.

| **Compliance Fees** setting | Compliance installed? | Date of birth on file? | Result |
| -------------------------------- | --------------------- | ---------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Either                           | No                    | —                      | No fee, no check.                                                                                   |
| Add compliance fee to each order | Yes | No | A fee is calculated and added. No legality check runs. |
| Do not add compliance fees | Yes | No | Nothing happens. |
| Either | Yes | Yes | The full prepurchase check runs — legality is checked and any fee it returns is added to the order. |

{% hint style="warning" %}
With CrushSuite Compliance installed and a date of birth on file, the full compliance check runs whether or not **Compliance Fees** is turned on, and any fee it returns is added to the release order total. **Do not add compliance fees** only suppresses the fee-only path used when no date of birth is on file. If you need fees off entirely, configure that in CrushSuite Compliance.
{% endhint %}

Date of birth comes from the Compliance app's own records, not from anything Clubs collects — the one exception is member migration, where an imported date of birth is pushed to Compliance for you.

#### Where the fee shows up

When a fee applies, it appears as a **Compliance fee** line on the release order detail view, on top of product subtotal and shipping. The line-item editor shows the same amount in its totals.

***

#### What a failed compliance check does

{% hint style="warning" %}
A failed compliance check is recorded as a note on the release order. It does not stop the order from being created or billed. If you need shipments hard-blocked on compliance, configure that in CrushSuite Compliance's pre-checkout requirements.
{% endhint %}

That note reads `Compliance check failed:`. An order with no such note either passed or was never checked — CrushSuite skips the check silently when Compliance isn't installed, when there's no date of birth on file, or when the Compliance app doesn't respond.

***

#### The migration embed setting that affects this

The **Club Migration** app embed has one setting, **Skip cart and go straight to checkout**, which defaults on. If you're migrating members while running Compliance, turn it off — with it on, members skip the cart entirely, and Compliance's pre-checkout check never gets a chance to run. See [Setting Up Your Club Product Template](https://crushsuite.gitbook.io/docs/clubs/getting-started/setting-up-your-club-product-template) for how to change it.
